FOUNDATION COURSE GLASS ART / Ciclo Formativo de Grado Medio de Pintura Sobre Vidrio
Fire painting on the surface of hollow or flat glass, with glazes or enamels, has been practiced since 5th century with the aim of adding improvements, due to its own qualities to the greatest appeal of glass. The first samples of decorated objects with enamels(pulverized color glass)came from the Arabic World, standing out the Syrian mosque lamps because of their aesthetic and technical perfection. The Arabs were the ones who incorporated such knowledge to our culture and this had made possible that Catalan enamelled glass from the 16th century are now an aim to study and respected by experts and collectors. The tradition of grisaille painting belongs to the Roman Christian world and in Spain there are some rests which demonstrate these techniques have been used since 12th century. A lot of present painters express themselves through fire painting with contemporary sensitivity. The technique is basically the same as in its origin, new technologies allow us to make firing process in objects and glass tops in a safe and comfortable way.
The grisaille painting is applied on glass in order to create shadows and profiles, being used in different ways to the ones which correspond to opaque surfaces; it deals with painting with light, a light which must be controlled with ability while using grisaille. On the glass, creating shadows as on the painting is blocking the light, when what we need is to control the light and color so as to get the required color.
